The Art of interviewing

Im giving you a link (click here) to a recent 60 Minutes piece on Will Smith. Pay close attention to shot selection, focus, lighting, etc.
Each students should pick one characteristic from the interview (whether it's lighting, seating arrangement, shot selection, etc. ) and give me a their thought on that one characteristic (you liked it, did not like it, why?)
Pay attention to both interviewer and interviewee.

Dear Professor K. I note that you really know what you are doing when it comes to doing an interview properly. If you or your students are interested in discussing broadcast interviewing, I invite you to visit my blog at: http://conductknockoutbroadcastinterviews.com/blog/

I would love to have any thoughts you have. Thanks and keep up the good work, Ed Smith.

i believe that 60 minutes does a great job on the description, shot selection, and the lighting. Although, they do not have the 2 person shot, each shot is taken from the same side not crossing the one hundred and eighty degree line rule. Back and forth from person to person, just like how they should do it in an interview, each person the interviewer and the person, will smith, talking to each other. The interviewer had perfect lighting on himself with no shadows. Will Smith had the left side of his body shadowed. I think that all of the characteristics of the shots, angles, selections and arrangements were amazing and well planned out.

I really like the camera angle on Will in the interview. It seemed from the side, then back from a 30 degree angle. That angle seemed to me to be very dramatic. My opinion though on this interview is it did not have to be so dramatic. I feel that angle should be used for a more serious guest like a senetor or someone not soo lighthearted. I was waiting to hear some perils drom that serious angle, Like when youw atch a comedian its straight up front usuelly thats how I feel the intgerview should have been shot.

Jay & Mike
Great observations.
Both of you said that Will Smith received the "dramatic" treatment with the cam angle, but what about the difference of cam angle between Will and Kroft?

will and kroft both had the back and forth 180 degree line thing going on. Will was to the left of the camera angle and kroft was to the right of the camera angle. Hence the reason why Will had the shadow on the left part of his face and Kroft had absolutely no shadow on him at all. This is because the main light or maybe the only lights were to the right of Kroft and partial teh top of both of them giving the shadow to the left part of Wills body. Yet both shots were done correctly when using an interview angle, one camera on diagonally acrossed from will and other diagonally crossed from Kroft both shooting opposites. Thats the simliarities and differences in the shot

i think that the lighting to the right of Will Smith could have been better because one side of his face was bright while the other was dark. Granted they used a side angle for the interview i think that at times they could have changed the angle to give a different effect on the interview.

i love how 60 minutes uses their lighting i like how when they show will there is a little shadow o the left of will's face and i think it was a great to have more light on the interview then they do will it sets them apart and brings out the facial features of the interviewer i also really like the camera angles it is great that they chose to do a close up on will because he talks with so much emotion and that shot totally shows his passion the angle on the interviewer is more laid back much like his personality is is a bit wider to show his relaxed and ready to listen nature

The shots in the clips from sixty minutes are good. They get the up close shots whenever his is doing a one on one conversation. The lightening on the set, helps to relax the mood. Whenever there are groups on camera you can see the full body shots of the people in the shots.

I really enjoy how 60 Minutes sets up the camera angles for the interview. They have the light coming from Will's left, creating the shadow on his right. The aspect I particularly liked was that they were close in on Will; the only show him from the neck up, while they show Steve Kroft from further away. This emphasizes the fact that they're very focused on Will and what he has to say.

I simply admire the shot they have on Will Smith. I love the lighting and the close up. You are able to truly focus on him and everything he says. However, I am not so fond of the shot they give the man who is giving him the interview. It does not really match with Will's shot. I would have expected more for Kroft.

In this interview I particularly liked the shots in which there was an extreme closeup on Smith to exemplify his emotions via facial expressions. I also liked how the shot of the interviewer was farther back as to make the close-up on Smith more emphasized.

i thought that the 60 minute interview was sucessful for a couple different reasons. the interviewer seemed laid back and confident as did will smith. i liked how they did a head shot of will for a good chunk on the interview because it was easy to focus on him. i actaully liked the lighting because it cast a shadow on the left side on his face and it seemed to have a good dramatic affect.

I think the interview was very successful. Will Smith was videoed on scene and off scene during some of the movies. That was a good way to make the interview interactive, the interview is shot then it is illustrated with Will Smith at work. Will Smith makes it easy for the interview to feel comfortable, which allows the interviewer seem comfortable as well. The lighting was a little dark during the interview, it could have been a little lighter I think. The lighting did make it more dramatic, but then I think Will Smith wanted to make it more casual and fun. Overall I think it was a great interview, I didn't mind watching it.

I liked the part where it showed will smith and the interviewer in front of the building. I liked how the camera would go from a close up of will smith and the interviewer and then flashing to a wide shot of their backs in front of the building. These angles keep the interview interesting. and its a different style. It also was really cool how it paned in and out for everyone that they meet. Thats a different style that isn't normally used. It kept the interview interesting.

I think this interview was good. The close up on Will made the viewers only forcus on him which i think was the purpose of the interview. Also the lighting on him was good because it gave Will a shadow which gave a nice effect
